Gene Clark & Silverado at the Ebbets Field club, Denver (February 19, 1975)

A live show from the tragically underappreciated Clark, a founding father of country-rock.
quote:

Gene Clark's luck was rarely good when it came to his career after leaving the Byrds, and though his 1974 album No Other would come to be seen as a neglected masterpiece years after the fact, by early 1975 it was considered an expensive flop that put Clark on the bad side of David Geffen, and Clark was doing club dates when and where he could to make a buck and keep his name before the public. On February 19, 1975, Clark played in Denver, CO at a club called Ebbets Field, where he shared the bill with Tom Waits. A local radio station recorded the show for later broadcast, and 33 years after the fact, this night in the life of Gene Clark has finally been given an authorized release on CD. Silverado '75: Live & Unreleased finds Clark backed by Roger White on guitar and Duke Bardwell on bass and acoustic guitar, and while the trio (who were billed as Gene Clark & Silverado) sometimes sounds a bit rough, as if they're mapping out their set on the fly, the harmonies are superb and White's lead guitar offers a fine counterpart to Clark's strong and emotive vocals, which are still striking despite the low-budget circumstances of the gig. Clark plays two numbers from No Other, and "Silver Raven" and "No Other" sound a great deal different in such stripped down form, but it seems clear at this point Clark was hardly bothering to support his new release, and this recording features several songs that slipped through the cracks and never made it onto a proper album (such as "Home Run King" and "Daylight Line"), two numbers reaching back to his glory days with the Byrds ("Here Without You" and "Set You Free This Time"), and even a pair of old country chestnuts ("Long Black Veil" and "In the Pines"). Silverado '75 often sounds casual, as if this trio was performing for a handful of friends, but Clark was in full command of his muse this evening, and if this isn't an essential moment in his career, it's a reminder of just how consistently remarkable he could be, even playing a little bar on a Wednesday night. -- Mark Deming, Allmusic

Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Oakland Coliseum (January 31, 1970)

An unseen-for-decades TV special shot by a local PBS station. Nice concert footage but perhaps most interesting for the contemporary interview segments with John Fogerty.

The Jefferson Airplane at the Fillmore Auditorium (San Francisco, October 15, 1966)

I was never a huge Airplane/Starship fan (they were OK with singer Marty Balin, but when he left and was replaced by the hideously screeching Mickey Thomas ["Jane", "We Built This City"], they were atrocious). But since not one but two members of The Jefferson Airplane died on Thursday, I suppose attention must be paid.

Setlist:

1 Jam (9:08)
2 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds (6:21)

In Koncert

The Kinks live at BBC Center (January 24, 1973)

From just a wee tad after their golden age, this is still quite a show. The inarguable high point is the climactic "Village Green Preservation Society", one of the band's finest moments. The addition of a brass section gives the song a nostalgic, Edwardian quality befitting its wistful lyrics.

Setlist:

01. Victoria

The Byrds & The Flying Burrito Brothers at The Whisky-a-Go-Go, Los Angeles (September 19, 1970)

quote:

In 1970, Just three days after the release of Untitled, The Byrds new double album (featuring both live and studio recordings), both The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers were booked for a series of six shows over three nights at the Whisky A Go-Go in their home town of Los Angeles. The Whisky only held several hundred people and The Byrds hadn't performed there since October of 1968, so tickets were a hot commodity. Surrounded by family and friends (in addition to having a common fanbase), this run guaranteed a three-night party, playing to packed houses for every show. Each 90-minute show was structured with the FBBs performing a 45-minute opening set, immediately followed by a 45-minute set by The Byrds. This basic format continued throughout the run until the final night, when the two groups hatched a plan for the late show. For this final show of the run, the FBBs would begin their set as usual, but after several songs, they invited The Byrds out for an informal jam session. The rest of the night would feature both bands performing together for the very first time.

Until now, this event has been relegated to the stuff of legend, but presented here are the complete recordings of that very set, recorded by Byrds' sound engineer Dinky Dawson. Despite the challenging circumstances of such a tiny room, Dawson's soundboard cassette masters manage to capture a great deal, with all of the instruments and vocals audible. The balance is not perfect, but in this instance, the good far outweighs the bad. The setlist is a Byrds-lover's dream, containing material from both Sweethearts Of The Rodeo and The Notorious Byrd Brothers albums, in addition to classic early material. Despite the unrehearsed and somewhat intoxicated nature of these performances, it is obvious these musicians are having an awful lot of fun together.
Unfortunately this was after Gram Parsons departed the Burritos, but it is still a helluva show, highlighted by Kleinow's pedal steel and the brilliant guitar work of Clarence White.

The Frank Sinatra Timex Show: Welcome Home Elvis (Fontainebleau Hotel Miami Beach, May 12 1960)

quote:

Welcome Home Elvis was a 1960 television special on ABC starring Frank Sinatra and featuring Elvis Presley in his first televised appearance since coming home from his military service in Germany. The special was officially titled It's Nice to Go Traveling, but is more commonly known as Welcome Home Elvis, having featured Elvis in his first TV appearance in three years. This was also Frank Sinatra's fourth and final television special that he did for sponsor Timex.

The special also featured Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and Nancy Sinatra, who later starred with Elvis in his 1968 film Speedway.

Elvis performed "Fame and Fortune" and "Stuck on You", which were the two sides of his first post-army single. He also performed a duet with Sinatra. Elvis performed Sinatra's classic "Witchcraft" while Frank performed the Elvis classic "Love Me Tender".

The show was a great success, grabbing 41.5 percent of the ratings.

The King returns, following a sojourn on the soils of foreign wars, to reclaim his throne from the blue-eyed pretender

Marc, episode 6 (Granada TV London, September 1977)

Legendary T. Rex ("Bang a Gong [Get It On"]) frontman Marc Bolan's brief-run TV series. Think a glam '70s version of Solid Gold, with various acts lip-synching. Bolan was doing his sensitive dilettante persona before Bowie, so those unfamiliar with MB may find this especially interesting.

Bowie himself shows up doing "Heroes" (his vocal is live, FWIW); the other highlight for me is Eddie & The Hot Rods with their classic "Do Anything You Wanna Do".

Pay close attention at the very end of the show, during the Bolan-Bowie jam: you can see Bolan tripping over a microphone cable and Bowie getting a laugh out of it.

Videotaped September 7, 1977. Bolan was killed in a car wreck on the 16th; this episode aired on the 28th, about a week after his funeral.

Setlist:

"Deborah" - Marc Bolan with T. Rex
"Your Generation" - Generation X
"I'm a Fighter" - Lip Service
"Heart Throb's Dance" - Ain't it Strange
"Groove A Little" - Marc Bolan with T. Rex
"Ride A White Swan" - Marc Bolan with T. Rex
"Heart Throb's Dance (I Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet)" - Gonzalez
"Do Anything You Want to Do" - Eddie and the Hot Rods
"Heroes" - David Bowie
Instrumental Jam with David Bowie and Marc Bolan & T. Rex

"This group is called Generation X, their lead singer is called Billy Idol, and he's supposed to be as pretty as me. We'll see now.."

Levon & The Hawks at Pop Ivy's ballroom, Port Dover Ontario (1964)

quote:

“We have an announcement,” says the drummer between songs. “There’s lots of corn left! So alla you who feel like havin’ a cob…” Just another glamorous gig for Levon & The Hawks, the group that less than a year later would be shattering folkie ear drums with Bob Dylan, and by decade’s end would be known as The Band. Even at this early date, the Hawks were seasoned vets, having existed in one form or another since 1958. But this lineup, featuring Levon Helm, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson is the one the world would get to know.

This fairly miraculous (if decidedly lo-fi) tape captures what was undoubtedly just one of hundreds of similar shows for Levon & The Hawks, as the band made its way up and down the eastern seaboard, playing every dive along the way. Their repertoire — including standards by James Brown, Ray Charles, and Chuck Berry — could probably be heard in nine out of ten juke joints in the country. But one listen will show that this was no ordinary bar band. Levon and co. may have been a ways away from Big Pink, but a lot of the essential elements are in place: Manuel’s boozy croon, Robertson’s stinging guitar lines, Hudson’s swirling carnival organ and Helm’s unstoppable thump. Of course, a few things would be dropped along the way — the punky energy of the Hawks would be tamed in favor of The Band’s bucolic reveries, and of course, Robertson’s original tunes would come to the fore. And check out the flute solo that wafts in during a storming version of the theme from “Peter Gunn.” Hard to imagine that happening during “The Weight.” Turn this tape up and travel back in time. Maybe even have a cob or two... -- Aquarium Drunkard
