Bellamy Brothers Ft. John Anderson.

quote:

There ain't no country music for old men
All of the good ones have died or just packed it in
Now there's posers and losers and would-be outlaws who only know how to pretend
But there ain't no country music for old men

Ouch!

Considering the Bellamy Brothers were part of the OG Wave of pop country that got us where country music is today, that's rich.

Nah that 70s pop country just died. The neotraditional and outlaw backlash against it is what was co-opted. I would take it back. Give me John Denver and Crystal Gayle and early Alabama over bro country.

And it wasn't just a listing of nouns like today's BS. Beer/truck/cutoffs/cooler/boat/girl/dog/whisky/etc.

They were more on the soft rock side in the 70s, crossed over into country on the pop side and now is traditional country. They had quite a few crossover appeal.

Their sound is what moved country music away from the traditional sound and into the pop category. They showed Nashville you could make more $$$ with pop crossover crap than with traditional country

Of course it did, but the Bellamy's took it to another level. They were pop singers with a No 1 hit before they became country pop singers.

The debate of what is and what is not country music has been going on for decades. The Bellamy Brothers had nothing to with Nashville trying to gain a broader audience. They did that with the smooth, slick Nashville sound back in the 60s. This pushed artists such as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson to Austin which began the outlaw country movement. Nashville also pushed artists such as Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam out to California and thus the Bakersfield sound was widely popular in the West Coast much to the frustration of Nashville. The music combined the twang and sound of traditional country music with 50s rock n roll. That is what people wanted to hear.

Glen Campbell came to Nashville with his music on the pop side and no one complained then and have no reason to do so now. Kenny Rogers was a rock singer that came to country music and he wasn't defined
as traditional country music either. Both Campbell and the Bellamy Brothers I would rather to listen than the so called country music today. The funny thing is that the Bellamy Brothers have come full circle and are as traditional country now than what is coming out Nashville.
