I thought Black Keys too when I heard it.

I think that's because of the vocal effects and style that he's singing. The music sounds nothing like Black Keys.

I'm a huge Sturgill fan. Play his first 3 albums constantly. Was expecting a very different album this go around.

Very disappointed with that one. I don't think it's a good song at all.

According to Sturgill he is making a “sleazy steamy rock album”.

This song is not that.

Also this song is not very good.

Also the lyrics seem to have nothing to do with the video?

I didn’t care for it at first either, then it got better the more I listened. Some of my favorite songs took multiple listens. Some you listen to and right away you like it. That’s how most of his other work is, but this is way different... therefore a challenge because it’s not what you’re used to.

I tried again.

It’s just not a very good song. It’s not terrible but it’s rather boring.

He’s basically white Kanye West at this point.

I gave it 48 hours and a couple more listens and I like it now. Didn’t think that would be the case after the first listen.

He’s good at making songs kinda blend and flow together and make sense on an album. I think once we hear it in the context of the album it’ll make it pop more. I wouldn’t say it’s near his best work, but I like it. Very curious to hear the entire thing.

Sturgill is a big Paul Rodgers fan. I feel pretty damn confident about that. So am I.
Not crazy about some of the synth stuff, but I can see why it might have been called for.

Whoever the frick, thought that he was really a country artist? shite, I guess all I got to do, is throw my Waylon and Willy and Johnny and Merle licks in there someplace. frick, y'all will buy it, and not know any difference.

Huge disappointment for me. Sturgill refuses to dance with the ones who brought him.

Dude I’m as big a sturgill fan as anyone on here but this is not a good song. I respect an artists right to explore any avenue they wish but it doesn’t mean I have to like it just bc I loved their earlier work. While I liked Sailors guide, it was nowhere near in the same stratosphere as metamodern (which might be an impossible standard to top lol) Its not crazy to want the artist to play the type/sound of music that made you love them in the first place. “In the context of the album, it will make more sense” “He has a way of blending things together” I get what you are saying but would you release a single that wasn’t one of the stronger tracks on the album? He must think this is one of the stronger songs on the album which is disappointing.. maybe he is just saying I’m moving further away from the outlaw country sound. First it was the horns (which I didn’t hate but also didn’t love), now it’s a synthesizer. It’s just disappointing bc I think he is one the best right now to really play country music in a industry with so few. I hope I’m completely wrong and the album is amazing bc I want more great Sturgill. Metamodern and Hill Top still get played in my truck after prob 1000’s of listens and I still love all of them. Do you see yourself listening to this song even a month from now? This is no way attacking your opinion, just stating mine. Cheers

Man, I have been writing country songs for 40 years. I still love Rock'n'roll. We aren't allowed to do both? BRB, checking The Constitution.

He released “Brace for Impact” as a single before Sailors Guide was released. I think it’s one of the weakest tracks on the album and wasn’t a big fan when I first heard it. I love Sailors Guide as an album though.

Not what I was saying at all but if this is Sturgill’s vision of Rock, he needs to stick to country. I wish you more success writing both than he has found so far.
