Musicians/Vocalists vs Just Vocalists

Anyone else automatically think a little less of a lead singer or solo artist who doesn't play an instrument live? Just standing there with a mic.

Bob Pollard writes most of Guided by Voices songs, but doesn't play an instrument on stage...
But then again, if he did, we'd miss out on all the leg kicks, mic twirling, beer drinking and tequila swilling that he does on stage... And that would be unfortunate...

A lead singer? No. None of my favorite vocalists play an instrument, except their voices.

If someone has a voice like Linda Ronstadt or Adele, they don't need to play an instrument.

The only instruments Sinatra played were Lucky Strike cigarettes and whatever he was drinking. Greatest pop singer of them all.

Yes. I like great vocal talent, but I've known plenty of great singers who have put little or moderate effort into their craft. I don't know any great musicians who have done so.

Depends on the singer. For example, I would think less of Dave Matthews if he wasn't also contributing to the band with the guitar.
Guys like Steve Perry, on voice alone, were/are the defining part of their band. David Lee Roth was respected for his voice and his entertainment. Very few, can stand on being a frontman and voice alone. Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry, etc are all in that group.

No. Just saying him playing at least makes me respect him to a degree. Would not if he were just a singer as he is not great at that either.

Dave is known more for his writing than his playing. And he's an expert recruiter
