I know everyone shits on this album but I think it's a bit unfair. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of absolute shite on there, at least by modest mouse standards. But there's enough good stuff and a few gems. I'm drunk listening to it now, thought I'd share......

What was bad about it? Thought it was pretty good

hipster modest mouse fans find it too much of a departure from their early stuff

I love Modest Mouse, old and new. We Were Dead was a great album.

Biggest gripe I've heard was 'it's too poppy'. I can see that a bit i suppose (mostly in Florida, just structure how they tease the chorus). I like the album, don't love it like their prior shite, i just don'tget the hate.

I find it to be pretty derivative and not very creative. It's like they made an album that tried to sound like a MM album, so it ended up sounding cliche. There are a few good songs, but it's not very consistent at all.
It just doesn't stand up well to the rest of their material. I mean you listen to Lonesome Crowded West and then We Were Dead back to back and its just no contest.

We Were Dead isn't one of their best albums, but I don't think the band declined overall. I mean, their breakthrough album is just as good as any of their early albums. Sure, Float On was a surprise hit, but any album with Bury Me With It and Bukowski on it can't be all bad... those are two of the best songs in the entire MM songbook.
I do agree there's just too much backlash to MM getting popular. I think their new stuff is just as good as their old stuff. Nothing lives up to Moon and Antarctica because... well, that's one of the best albums ever recorded and nothing can live up to that.

I prefer Lonesome Crowded West to M&A.
