Album released today. All 8 of the unreleased are solid on 1st listen.

Inamorata - is tops so far, 11 minutes and stays fresh all the way through. Middle bass section to guitar harmonies is awesome, though the hi-hat is too far up in the mix.

Room of Mirrors - second favorite on 1st listen, the harmonies at 3:36 to the double bass will sound awesome live.

Shadows Follow - love the guitar after V3 into the solo.

Crown of Barbed Wire - solid effort.

All in all really good, great riffs all the way through. For all 4 pushing 60 years old, I'd say damn good effort.

They need to slow it down with the speed metal and go back to heavy grooves.

We went to the listening party at a local theater last night. It was kinda corny, but mostly fun. Sadly, the sound was terrible and sounded like they were playing it over AM radio. However, I found that there was only 1 or two songs that were meh, but most were pretty good. The songs were all pretty long and that could be the biggest reason the album is not well received. Folks nowadays don't seem to have any sort of attention span. Planning on having it on repeat today.

They also said they would be broadcasting the live feed from the Dallas show in theaters. Good chance to see the tour without paying an arm and a leg.

Everything I've seen has been positive. And as far as song length, Metallica fans aren't looking down on long songs. They've kept it fresh w/ riff and tempo changes anyway.

No problem with long songs, but damn, every intro is a 5 minute instrumental…if these songs had the Black Album production, holy shite this would be awesome.

Thats good. I hadn't really gone looking for opinions yet since it just dropped. I don't care if they are short or long, just good.

Just an aside, but it is so interesting to see the evolution of opinions on the black album. When it came out, it was a pretty big disappointment to most Metallica fans I knew, but it seems to have replaced Master of Puppets as the standard for younger fans. It's a good album, it just was pretty generic against the other rock the was out at the time.

I usually gravitate toward the harder, thrashier songs but If Darkness Had A Son is the one I just cannot get out of my head.

Just started it. 72 Seasons sounds more like Megadeth than Metallica to me

doing first listen right now, intro to You Must Burn is sick. It may be my favorite so far. Really enjoying the album through 5 songs so far.

Damn missed how good that is on first listen, definitely top 3 for me. Around 3:42 the riff and the interplay w/ the drums is awesome. Hetfield even pulls out a lil Layne Staley in that section.

Lots of filler on this album.

72 Seasons, Shadows Follow, Lux, Screaming Suicide and Inamorata are legit. Too Far Gone and Sleepwalk My Life Away are growing on me. Time will tell with the rest.

Anyone going to their shows in Arlington later this summer?

Filler? You named 7 of 12 as liking and didn't even name 3 of the best, You Must Burn, Room of Mirrors, and If Darkness Had A Son. Even after a day its ahead of Hardwired to me. Not bad after a 7 year layoff.

It’s definitely their best material
since The Black Album, but the sound drives me crazy! WTF do these guys have against bass? And bottom end in general?

Check out their performance of Lux AEterna on Howard Stern if you want to hear Rob in the mix.
