Listened to this today. Its got elements of some of their other albums but isn't as good as any of them. There's two or three really good songs, the rest are just ok. Not a bad album, but far from their best.

Warms my heart to see this thread on here. Been listening to this band since about '02 or '03. Emperor is really solid. Dug back into their catalogue today while spinning some vinyl. Not sure which is my favorite of theirs. Maybe Blood Mountain? Emperor will be on repeat for a while no doubt.

About ten full listens under my belt. It’s a tremendous album.
Really showcases the "proggy" Mastodon while also containing accessible songs with soaring choruses. I’m admittedly a much bigger fan of their clean vocals, but I think these songs contain the strongest collective use of the bands’ diverse vocals to date.
Plenty of jamming out, absurd solos, and of course Brann’s otherworldly work at the kit. Really digging this, and I agree with the critical consensus that it’s their strongest since “Crake the Skye.”
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Mastodon might be the most important American metal band going, certainly in the prog subgenre.
