As you may remember from my Mahogany vs Rosewood thread, I've always just assumed I liked rosewood better so have never owned a mahogany guitar.

Having played a few, I love the tone and I think I'm ready to purchase a really good one.

I'm thinking either an Atkin Essential D or a Martin D18 - Golden Era (preferably in ambertone or sunburst).

I also have knocked around the idea of a D18 with Sinker mahogany but have never actually played one.

Anyone own/have owned either of these or have other brands/models I should also research?

Like I said in the other thread, a friend has a Martin D-16 that's spruce top with mahogany back and sides. It's a great guitar.
I think you can buy one for about $1,600.

My Hummingbird but I would LOVE to have a Martin D or HD28 someday since I like the Rosewoods too.

How loud is your Hummingbird? The ones I've played are always kind of muffled but Gibsons seem to vary a lot.

The best mahogany guitar I ever played was a Santa Cruz 1929 00, just an immaculate guitar and much louder than I expected.

Have you looked at the Taylor builder's edition models? I think the 517e comes with mahogany back and sides, and the styling is less aggressive than typical Taylors. I remember really liking the way it played.

Anudda vote for Hummingbird. If you're going for the mids and sponginess of mahogany, a hog-backed Gibson is a no-brainer IMHO.

Santa Cruz

OP. If you wanted the waters muddied, there you go. Santa Cruz are ridiculously good. If you are already looking at Golden Era martins and Sinker woods, you are in the wheelhouse price wise.

not what you're looking for, but my buddy had an all-mahogany gibson L-00 (?) small parlor shape sounded great

I have always been a spruce/redwood fellow, dreadnought, jumbos, 12 strings.
A few years ago I wanted to downsize and settled on a Martin 000 15 SM all solid mahogany. I mostly finger pick with some strumming, I must say that was one of my best decisions.
I ran the gambit of different strings and Monel strings are the perfect match for this guitar
I play my other guitars in an unorganized rotation but the 000 15 SM I play everyday.
There are a lot of options with the 15 Series from Martin.

I have the similar Martin 000 15M and I love it. It's the guitar I play every day as well.

15M martins are a no brain answer. It’s the stick to measure all others against.

Like the previous poster, if I did one I’d go all out. 000 slotted headstock and the little 12 fret body/neck joint. That guitar should be able to do it all. Hold its own with others to sit on the couch EVERYday and not get tired of it.

Got to like mahogany though. If you don’t like how a Martin sounds you will probably be able to nitpick anybody else’s offerings.
