If you think this is what makes you a musician you are missing the point, and badly.

I guess that's why it won a Grammy and Beyonces " Drunk in Love" took ten writers to write.

It doesn't make you an idiot; it just means you have terrible taste in music.

I have no concern for how many writers "Drunk In Love" has. What does interest me is that it is better than every song on Beck's album.*

I also have no concern for the Grammy's. I have no idea what their criteria is. None.

*I really like some of Beck's stuff, but I definitely did not like this album.

Being a musician is when you take a musical instrument and, using your fingers or mouth, create music from nothing.

Being a musician is not using a computer or mixer to take snippets of music made by others (or the computer) and make a song. That makes you a producer or an engineer. Not a musician.

When I was a kid way back in the 80s and turned 12" singles into 45 minute "megamixes" with my totally rad cassette deck, that didn't make me a musician.

When I picked up my saxophone, trumpet, or keyboard and played the opening riff to "Baker Street", the Hummel Concerto, or Fur Elise, that made me a musician.

Wait, so because I don't like The garbage that Kanye puts out, that means I have terrible taste in music. Hahahahaha. This coming from the guy that thinks Hendrix wasn't very good.

Oh wait, I forgot I wasn't gonna acknowledge you because you've previously proven you're a musical illiterate. Enjoy your Kanye

No.

The ability to make good music makes you a musician. You can use whatever tools you like.

Moreover, your characterization of using snippets of music made by others makes me think you don't listen to Kanye. Beck has actually done more sampling in his career than Kanye.

At what point did you stop listening to new music? Like 30 years ago?

Also, I think Hendrix made some good music, just not as much good music as Nirvana made.

Also, if you think Kanye puts out garbage, that's your opinion, but I strongly disagree and people whose opinions I respect when it comes to music also disagree.

Also, it's kind of ironic that you prop up Beck's grammy win and dismiss a guy who has won 21 of them. So I guess Grammy's matter....unless it's an artist you don't like? Rich stuff.

To clarify, when Mozart wrote all those symphonies in his head, he wasn't a musician? It wasn't until he assembled an orchestra and had them play it out? Is this ACTUALLY what you're saying?

Stated differently: your definition is silly. The ability to make new music is what makes you a musician. The tools you employ are merely a means to that end.

If he would have never written them down or played them he would not have been a musician. But the fact that he took at least one of his ideas and turned it into written/performed music made him a musician.

Calling Kanye West, or The Beastie Boys, or Snoop Dogg musicians is an insult to anyone who has ever picked up an instrument or read a chart or composed so much as an etude. I happen to think that the above are three of the most important artists in their genre, but not musicians (unless somebody can show me where they have picked up a guitar or sat behind a piano).

I think most musicians would agree with me.

You are a fricking retard. The Beastie Boys released two all instrumental funk albums with them playing all the music. Their shows featured several instrumental passages.

What an epic fall of a post. Do research before making such stupid claims.

Mozart was a virtuoso piano player. He did use the piano to help write his symphonies.

By some definitions, a musician is the actual instrumentalist.

I was being a little overreactionary, but people sleep on the Beasties so hard. One of the very best to ever do it, regardless of genre.
