Can I tell you a story grunty? Is it ok if I call ya grunty?
One time when I was just a wee little lad, my father took me to Whataburger, like his father had him, and his father before him. I was excited, since this was my first trip to Whataburger. I had never been to a Whataburger before, but I heard it was something to be seen and had. Being the young tyke that I was, I would get overly excited for outings likes this. The pure joy I would soon experience from walking up to the counter and ordering a juicy, Grade A, Texas Sized, Burger was enough to make a kid's day.
We pulled into the Whataburger and I was the first out of the car, rushing to the door, a little skip the whole way there. I was just old enough to open the door, so I reached up, grabbed the handle, and pulled it open. WOW, I thought, as the smell of fresh fries and grilled burgers hit my nostril like a line of cocaine. This must be heaven I thought...I tell ya. Those were the days

I saw some musician who offhandedly commented, "I'm not on the PBS oldtimers circuit yet" 
Some of those are really sad. Maybe some might get off on the nostalgia. I can't get past the decrepit performances and shriveling voices.
There are a lot of old time rockers that have become almost parodies of their past selves. Some of them so long it's almost hard to remember them being dynamic. Ozzie is prolly the best example cuz he capitalized on his deterioration specifically. Go back and look at some of these back in the day if you are asking "How the hell were they ever popular?"
Again, OZZIE as an example.
