It looks like drugs were likely the cause.

quote:

Justin Townes Earle likely died from a “probable drug overdose,” a spokesperson at the Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed to Rolling Stone on Tuesday. Police conducted a welfare check at the 38-year-old songwriter’s Nashville apartment on Sunday after one of Earle’s friends said they hadn’t heard from him since Thursday. MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron told Rolling Stone that the Nashville Fire Department entered the residence and found Earle dead. An autopsy is pending.

His cover of Paul Simon's Graceland is phenomenal and worth a watch regardless if you know his music or not.

As is his cover of The Replacements' Can't Hardly Wait.

JTE was one of those artists I'd go on long droughts between listening to him, but every time I re-visited him it was always so comforting and familiar. Rogers Park will always be my favorite tune of his, and one of my favorite songs overall.

When the first notes of the piano hit, it stops me in my tracks every time.

This one seems like an unfortunate self fulfilling prophecy.

Really sad, talented songwriter and I was a big fan.

I was beyond sad hearing he had passed. It was amazing how well he could write great songs across multiple genres, I don't think there have been many like him that can do that. It was very refreshing to hear his songs compared to all the crap music put out across multiple genres the last 10 years or so. Lucky I got to see him 7 times, his show in Roswell when he had a full band with him and the guy playing pedal steel was fantastic. Still recall seeing Steve playing at the Variety Playhouse way back when and Justin filling in on drums for a few songs. You see Isbell playing with him on Letterman and see his whiskey bloated face, he is very fortunate to have turned his life around and established a great career. I think the lack of ability to get on the road and tour was a major reason the OD occurred, he had to much time to fill without performing. Can't even fathom trying heroin as a 12 or 13 year old kid.
