I never realized how bad they got screwed early on. I was listening to his interview on Stern last week and the estimate is over 100 million.

The way I'd always understood it is that John signed about as bad a contract as he could have without consulting Tom and the others and that that was the genesis of the bad blood between them.

The other members of the band wound up secretly selling their voting rights to Vantz. Many, many years later, the company who bought Fantasy began paying John royalties.

But he gave up the royalties to get out of the original terrible contract.

I didn't take notes during the interview or anything but one of the other guys in the band had a father that was a lawyer and they asked him to look it over. He never did but the other guy said he did and said it was good to go.

Heard most of it....Great interview by Stern...

Amazing to me the other guys didn't realize that Fogerty was the man...they demanded that the songs they wrote and sang should be included and that is when CCR tanked.

Excellent interview. I don't think I ever realized how briefly CCR existed.

Fogarty refused to sing their songs.

Because he thought they were crap? Fogerty has always been very clear that CCR was his backing band, that he wrote and arranged all the songs, that his older brother Tom must have been so embarrassed that John had all the talent that he betrayed him at the end of his life by calling evil Zantz "his best friend", etc. Fogerty was always the star, and damned if he wasn't aware of that. I suppose it's a fair assessment, but it's unfortunate he had those other guys in his shadow, as he can come off as a bit of a prick when discussing them if you lose sight of the truth of things. It would have been better for everyone if he had been a solo act.

Neither did I, it's amazing the amount of great songs they put out.

He told the others that his voice was a 'unique instrument' and he wouldn't use it on their songs. This was on the last album, 'Mardi Gras', when Tom had already left the band.

Perhaps the greatest rise of all time. From total nothingness, to biggest band in the world with LOTS of hits, back to nothingness.

I just finished reading his new autobiography - Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music

and you could not be more wrong. What happened was one of the other guys' (I think it was Stu) dads was a fairly hotshot attorney in SF. So John insisted that the dad give it the once over before they signed. Eventually, he was told the dad said "no changes" so he signed.

John Fogerty was really truly and utterly fricked in the arse by almost everyone in re to CCR. Saul Zaentz is, I hope, rotting in hell for taking such vile advantage of one of the great American talents of all time.

Thanks for the input and informing me about his book. I just ordered a copy from Amazon. Can't wait to read it myself.
