I dont know how this one has evaded me for so long. Just heard it for the first time while listening to an old xfm Rick gervais podcast and was blown away.

I had always assumed that the song was written by The Highwaymen, waylon or willie. I had always liked their version but after hearing the original, it doesn't even come close.

Am I just an idiot or have other people made that mistake before? I honestly didnt even know any of jimmy Webb's stuff before. Damn shame, reminds me of Warren zevon in that they're both brilliant songwriters and dont get much recognition.

Yep. He also wrote McArthur Park which Donna Summer made a smash and Up Up and Away that was a hit for the Fifth Deminsion. Before covid Jimmy Webb would sometimes play at a small venue here in Dallas I never did get over there to see him.

I love the way he sang that, but his guitar playing was off the charts. About perfect.

I've always thought that Knopfler's song: Dream Of The Drown Submariner, was a kind of tribute to this particular performance. He really borrowed a lot of guitar licks from it.
