is a brilliant song. I truly don't think it gets the credit it deserves as an all-time great.
It's over 9 minutes long and you never get tired of it.

What's truly amazing about 'The Load Out/Stay' is that the band recorded it after only basically one practice run. Waddy Watchel (I might have that spelling a little wrong) and the rest of his band were some of the absolutely best in the business. It is utterly stunning they could pull that off like they did.

I always pictured his crew tired as hell, waiting to load his piano while he sings homage to them.

Funny, that's exactly how I pictured it too. Love the song but Running on Empty is my fave on that album.

I think You Love The Thunder is underrated (and underplayed) as well.

As for Load Out/Stay, the references are a little dated ("Richard Pryor on the video" "8 tracks and cassettes and stereo"). But otherwise it is tremendous.

I can appreciate it for the story he tells.

Dr My Eyes is my favorite JB song.

The road took its toll on JB as well...he used to take it out on his crazy arse girlfriend at the time--Darryl Hannah--by whipping her arse. I believe she had a restraining order against him

I love Jackson Browne. "For a Dancer" is a favorite of mine, high on my list.

Waddy Watchel

Waddy doesn't have a credit on Running on Empty, just FTR. Waddy played with almost everyone during that era, including JB, but Danny Kortchmar was JB's primary guitar player for Running on Empty.

(Interesting note - Waddy's older brother, Jimmy is a graphic artist and did the cover art for Running on Empty and about a 100 others of the 70s 80s - many of whom we've all seen including many of Joe Walsh/James Gang, Buckingham Nicks, etc.)

(ETA: In fact, Waddy was almost certainly on the road with Linda Rondstadt during the Running on Empty era.)

(Further edit - there are lots of internet references that suggest Waddy has the solo on the track Running on Empty - if this is true, it appears to be uncredited, just for completeness.)

Well then I'm a fan of Jimmy's work.
