I just watched the full video for the first time in years and it’s haunting, moving, and sobering. The images of Cash’s glory days juxtaposed against the crumbling House of Cash are brilliantly done. Cash is in such rough shape that it borders on exploitation. The viewer feels uncomfortable. June looks uncomfortable. It’s like an audio-visual epitaph. Powerful stuff.

Could be “top 10” of artist’s final/late career videos.

This is more about the video than the song.

NIN version doesn't. And I like the Live NIN video to this better too.

I know a lot of people like this song and Cash's cover... and I guess I understand why..

I find it borderline unlistenable... I actually was never been a fan of his collaboration with Rick Rubin, specifically the more modern covers.. the one exception was the U2 song..

It was a nice way for him to go out. Definitely a little tear jerking

The NIN version of this song is incredible. IMHO it’s the best thing Reznor has ever done (except maybe his Quake soundtrack).

That said, Cash and Rubin took Reznor’s song about drug addiction and transformed it into something deeper and more universal: the ravages of aging, infirmity, and death. The video underscored this beautifully and painfully. It is truly one of those rare instances where a promotional clip approaches the level of serious artistic expression.

I have very strong feelings about this video, as I first discussed it with my father, some years before his own downward spiral into physical and mental deterioration and eventual death. I can’t watch it now without that association, and the knowledge that his fate, like Cash’s, will eventually come to myself as well.
