Is it possible to have 1 dead string on a bass?

I was playing last night and 1 string just went dud on me. Thud. No other strings were out of order, just fretting 2 notes on 1 string. I'm confused about what is going on here.

Did you retune? Check your saddle and the nut? Did your string just slip in the tuner? Check the board for Fretshack's winding tips.
Look at stuff close. How old are the strings?
Strings break. Fact of life. Especially the ones that you play on the most.
tell us more.
is it buzzing on frets? I've never played bass at all, but sometimes I think the string can break inside, but the winding stays fine, seems like I've seen that happen before.

Was it just a few notes that were dead, or the whole string all the way down? Which string?
If just a few notes, there can be dead spots on necks. If the whole string, it has to be a pickup issue.

Basically the E and F notes on the D string. No other issues. These notes have been good to go for the last 2 years. It was professionally set up 5 months ago. So the strings are 5 months old.

I think the cheapest and easiest thing to do is change the D string to see what happens. Agree?

Buy better strings. Mine are two years old and still sound great

Necks can develop dead spots. And they can move around. Try playing unplugged and see if you still notice a difference. Like a dull thudding compared to other notes. Try tuning that string up and down and see if the spots move up and down the neck.

Bass players only use one string, anyway, so no big deal.

Quick guess ... this freaky weather has caused a reduction in normal neck relief, and the flattening of the neck has exposed minor fret wear in the cowboy chord area. But a tech needs to examine to determine what's going on. Doesn't sound like a bum string to me ... you'd have issues all over if so.

So what do you have going on today?
