If you had a very successful band, how long would you continue to make albums?

Take The Doors for instance, not by choice, but they were together roughly 6 years with 6 studio albums. And they are legends.
The Beatles = 10 years, 12 albums.
U2 = Since 76 to present, approx 12 albums.
Nirvana = 7 years, 3 albums.
Aerosmith = 40 years, approx 15 albums.
I believe bands stay together too long which ultimately diminishes their value (like with any good product) I realize "as long as you sell, why not"...but I would look at the bigger picture and leave on top.
I say 10 years, 7 albums would be ideal. And don't do "reunion tours". What y'all think?

1984 - the present = 28 years 10 albums.
As long as you are still having fun, playing music for the sake of music, and love what you are doing you can keep it up forever. Their sound has changed greatly over the years but i love and respect every album of theirs for different reasons.

Rush = 38 years and 20 studio albums. There album released Tuesday is great, they still put on a great show and don't show many signs of wear.

Absolutely this. If you enjoy it, and people still like your work, why in the world would you just quit? Artistic integrity?

I would pull a Beatles, break up in our prime right after arguably our best album and one of the greatest albums of all time.

Melvins and Napalm Death have both been around 20+ years with 20+ albums and still making great music.

I agree with Breesus here. I'd keep going until it just didn't feel right anymore. As long as I'm having fun doing what I love, why stop?
Now, going on a hiatus for a while is needed, several times. Disappear for a while and escape giving it all a break, that's what would keep things fresh for yourself and the fans.

Exactly. Way back in the day Mick Jagger was quoted as saying "I'd rather be dead than singing satisfaction when i'm forty-five". This year he turns 69!
It ain't the money, it's fun. I'd do it as long as the Stones have. Hell, most of us have to work a regular, boring job that long...why wouldn't you stay active in music!
