Honestly, I would recommend starting with their first record, and just going through them in chronological order. It's interesting to see how the sound evolved.

This seems like an odd thing to me.
I have never decided to get into anybody,it just sort of happens, one song leading to another. One day you realize, damn,I'm a fan,or,you lose interest.
Did you hear 1 song that caught your attention or what?

I don't see that... I like that record and know it predates UT, but I think they are different sounds... just my opinion..
My favorite Tweedy song is Gun off of Still Feel Gone.. It was the first one of his that made you say, hmmmm... this band may not just all be about Farrar...

I was going with Anodyne just to simplify things a bit.
Then decide whether to move forward or backwards in time. Or sideways.

I like Whiskey Town better than Wilco, but, I love the Wilco song about the New Orleans radio station WWL's radio show that was called "Road Gang". It was a trucker's show that started at 11pm every night and the show didn't end until 5am. You could drive all night long listening to that radio show. Even if you were driving alone, you weren't really alone.

Wilco is definitely a band you need to consume their catolog chronologically. Start with AM. Uncle Tupelo is a better starting point, but that's a lot to ask of someone just testing the waters.

My favorite is sky blue sky. It's An incredible album and very underrated, not only in their catalog, but all around. It's hard to say this isn't Wilco at their best, and I've been listening to them since I was like 5.
Having said that, like someone above me said, maybe just start at the beginning and see how they get there. I always find that to be the most fun way to "discover" established bands. I will admit that their most recent material is likely their weakest so don't work back.
Give them a chance, they are a bit of a "moody" band at times and might not always be what you are in the mood for, but when they are they will have you hooked.

The guitar work on that song is world class. The whole album for that matter.
I'd agree to not start with this album, get to know the band with some of their lighter earlier stuff and work your way there.
