he got craploads of play on the radio across different formats of stations.
He would only be 80, even now.
And, he was everywhere. For you younger guys, the 70s was a real high point for the variety show. The crossover artists tended to get booked there, particularly if you could act a little and/or had some charm. Plus, there were a ton of interview shows (fills the role podcasts do today), Dinah Shore, Dick Cavett, among others, did long-form interviews and he showed up on those, plus the usual Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson, etc. He had his own series of variety shows. He led some films.
He was inescapable on television from the early 70s to early 90s.

He didn’t write Country Roads, btw.
He was one of three writers of that song.

Grassed up cover of Country Roads. I kind of like this one.

Annie's Song is probably the prettiest love song ever made.
Denver's song is great but I present Allison Kraus' song 'Looking in the Eyes of Love' (she didn't write it, but performed it exquisitely.

I don’t. Too syrupy.
That was why he had such appeal to so many demographics in America. Young and Old alike were fans.
Sure, back in his day, you could prefer Acid Rock such as MC5 or Jimi Hendrix's song "Machine Gun", but, those were "niche" music products back in John Denver's day.
Look at Paul McCartney's most memorable songs from his days with The Beatles - many if not most of them are very "syrupy". So much so that John Lennon characterized Paul's writing as "Granny Music", and he was right.

It's very sad that he died flying his own plane after his mechanic warned him that it wasn't 100% ready for flight. Some celebrities think they are invincible I guess.

Just the other day while listening to the W VA pregame show, I heard that when John Denver’s wife told him she wanted a divorce, he took a chainsaw to their bed.
