I think The Beach Boys are great, I just hate that all present discussions immediately go to “Pet Sounds” and “God Only Knows”. When I’m ready to listen to them, I’m reaching for “Endless Summer” first, then “Pet Sounds”.

There are few that would argue with this. But Mike, while important, isn't close to the importance of Brian. Brian Wilson will be remembered as a pioneer and creative force, Mike Love will be little more than a footnote.

I like a few of their songs but I don't care for their surf songs at all, or their sound, in general.

God Only Knows, In My Room, Good Vibrations, and Sail On Sailor are about the only songs by them that I really like.

Nirvana
Aerosmith
The Eagles
maybe THEN Beach Boys

This explains a LOT. Kurt will be remembered as an artist and voice of his generation. That is primarily for the lyrics and performances. Nirvana's music is fairly straight forward and didn't push the boundaries of what else was happening at the time (this is not a knock on Nirvana, I like Nirvana quite a bit). Brian Wilson was doing things with orchestration and arrangement few people in pop/rock were even considering at the time.

quote:

I just don't like their tunes
sorry, not sorry

So because you don't enjoy them, they "suck eggs". Your subjective opinion (which is 100% valid for you) is stated in a way that comes across as a qualitative judgement. I'm often quite amused by such arguments. Bach is nowhere near my favorite composer, but my God, that man was an unqualified genius. I don't understand why people love Satie, but I merely say "Eh, not for me." I wouldn't say he "sucks eggs". You don't get the Beach Boys, cool. There is really nothing wrong with not getting art even if others love it. It simply doesn't speak to you. But to express that as "they suck eggs" seems superficial, reactionary and provoking. Perhaps that was your intention all along.

And let's be honest, if the Beach Boys are on your list as the 4th greatest American band, and they "suck eggs", you must not like much music from the US at all.

Well said.
Lots of artists I don’t like that I can still appreciate

Brian Wilson was a songwriting genius who defined pop in such a way that still stands today.

Just look at I Get Around. It literally boils down to "frick Bitches, Get Money". I may hate the soulless and conceited edge they gave pop, but you can't deny the influence.

Isn’t it cool how lyrics can be subtle without the need to beat you over the head. I wonder what genre doesn’t get it.

I am not sure that the lyrics are very subtle or non-repetitive.

Probably the fact that it’s usually listed in the top few greatest albums ever produced has something to do with this.

I just don’t remember it getting that type of acclaim until this century. You would hear it mentioned as influential, but that’s about it. This is, admittedly, my personal experience.

That’s a bit of a stretch. Doubtful many would have that interpretation.

What? Did you check the lyrics before you posted that?

quote:

I get around
From town to town
I'm a real cool head
I'm makin' real good bread

quote:

My buddies and me are getting real well known
Yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone

quote:

We always take my car 'cause it's never been beat
And we've never missed yet with the girls we meet
None of the guys go steady 'cause it wouldn't be right

To leave their best girl home now on Saturday night. I get around.

It is quite literally "frick Bitches, Get Money".

That actually shows respect for their would-be girlfriends by not subjecting them to their Saturday night boyish cruising ritual but hey if “frick bitches” is where your head wants to go with it that’s a bit dark but knock yourself out.

He's saying none of the boys are in committed relationships because they are picking up girls as they go from town to town and it wouldn't be right to cheat. The line directly before:

quote:

And we've never missed yet with the girls we meet

Same exact content that you hear in pop today: "I'm the shite, I make lots of money, I have badass cars and frick a lot of women".

I mean, the title of the song is literally "I Get Around" lmao.

This is almost exactly what I was about to say but you beat me to it. I completely agree with you on this
