i watched a documentary about lou pearlman and max martin. for ten years, most of the mainstream hits were between these two guys. pearlman made nsync and the backstreet boys. martin wrote for spears, aguilera, katy perry, the boy bands, etc... its crazy how much money these guys made. one of them got caught running ponzi schemes.

Singles hitmakers have always been around. With the decline of 45s/singles it became almost a genre unto itself. I always think of Led Zeppelin as the first mega successful non-singles/hits band. Only 'Whole Lotta Love' charted (#4) top 10.
Would it be correct to say singles/hits sales and role has been revived with the advent of digital music distribution?

That would be an interesting historical question -- what was the first major (commercially speaking) rock act to establish itself solely through albums?
Pink Floyd broke through with DSOTM in 1973 w/o ever having a hit single in the US (they'd had some in the UK), but there must have been one before them. Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" was a top 20 single, if you're thinking him.
