Here's the thing about Tool that's sets them apart from all the rest

Tool has been together for 23 years. Whenever Tool releases a new album, I'm as excited to hear the new album as I was when I first listened to every Tool album released before it.
When the next album eventually drops, no question I will be listening to it on repeat for months straight because it will certainly be as incredible if not more incredible than its predecessors. I know without doubt that it will be fresh, different, and will push musical boundaries. I know for certain that the band will have taken valuable time (understatement) and effort to create another masterpiece where every single note, every nuance, every nook and cranny of the album is a work of art.
Metallica and Phish simply don't meet those expectations.
Metallica is a lost band, pathetically searching for the fountain of youth, unwilling to embrace what they've become.
Phish is a band who is best live, but at least they know their niche. Noing wrong with that. However, they don't constantly strive to push the limit of musical boundaries to discover new artistic horizons. They are what they are. They've embraced it. Their fans love it. And they make tons of money. Good for them.
The difference is that whenever Tool debuts a new album and tour, it's like the first time you heard Metallica's album Master of Puppets. It's always a, "Holy crap! what the frick did I just listen to? That was incredible," moment. Ever...single...time.
Metallica is hopelessly searching for that again and Phish doesn't care to find that again.
Tool never lost it.

What sets tool apart is that they don't give a frick. They do shite on their own terms. That's why they have been together forever. Do what they want when they want and how they wanna do it.

Why do people keep comparing Tool and Phish?

It's the new dumb troll topic of the music board

Tool fans didn't start it...if you want someone to blame, look no further than the Phish phans

while i agree about your assessment of tool, i disagree what you said about phish. musically speaking, phish has gone through many phases since my first show back in 1995, and continue to do so....

Perhaps, but they never do anything groundbreaking. They have a formula and they follow it.
Nothing wrong with that.
Nothing wrong with that.

I'm prob one of the biggest TOOL fans on the board, but these threads are getting old.... Who gives a shite if someone doesn't like TOOL? There's no need to try to convince people...
To each his own. Bc someone else doesn't like them isn't going to impact my enjoyment one bit.
I don't get the love for Radiohead and they have as big of a cult following as TOOL.
Again, to each his own.

then i'd argue that tool doesn't do anything groundbreaking either. exciting? yes. but, unless their next album really goes out into left field, i'd expect a solid hard rock album with prog roots....a nice mesh, but "groundbreaking" is a stretch....

groundbreaking isn't a stretch.
equations, bro

Man, you got it bad for Tool, huh?

Is this the new Drake thread?
Posted on 3/17/14 at 9:50 am to Signal Soldier
I don't know. But evidently, Tool invented music and should be hallowed, and praised like Gods.

Naw brah, it's math equations and shite.

Yeah, I heard about the math inside the songs and shite. Awesome.
I like going to school when I listen to music.
