My two favorite songs are “Take Five” and “In A Sentimental Mood”.

My amazon jazz station keeps leading me down shitty song’s mostly with trumpet solos that sound like someone on speed is playing them. I can’t handle that crazy shite. Those types of song have no purpose other than to irritate me.

You strike me as a Cool Jazz guy, which I am very much so not, so take that with a grain of salt.

So, what you're going to want to avoid is Bebop. That's going to be Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and some of John Coltrane and Miles Davis. However, Miles did put out one cool jazz record which is outstanding called "Birth of the Cool"

You're already a Dave Brubeck guy, so I recommend digging deeper into his catalog.

Modern Jazz Quartet would be another good artist to look up. Softly as in a Morning Sunrise

I recommend Art Blakey & the Jazz Messangers - Moanin' as a good example of Hard Bop, which isn't as laid back as "Take Five" but not as weird as Bebop.

Also, a big fan of swing, including anything from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, or Benny Goodman.

Herbie Hancock is also a good one to listen to, though I doubt you'll be interested in his most popular work, "Headhunters" which was more of a jazz/funk/rock fusion album. Here's something likely to be your speed, though: Cantaloupe Island

Glad I could be of service. I do listen to a lot more than just "dad rock" and pop punk.

I love watching great jazz musicians live Almost as much as any other artist but it’s not something I ever desire to listen to on my own. Is this common? The improvisations blow me away when I’m watching but they don’t do anything for me if I am not watching.

I like the hard jazz stuff, but listen to everything. Best way to expand your horizons and find more artists that align with your tastes is to look at the players on your favorite albums and see who else they play with.

Check out Matthew Halsall’s Colour Yes for a modern take on 50’s cool jazz, with just a light touch of spiritual jazz without going full on Pharoah Sanders.

I have a huge jazz album collection, but I mostly focused on the 70's funk or spiritual jazz. Don't know exactly what kind of 'jazz' you are looking for, but I can give you a ton of recommendations. Some of my favorites are 'In a Silent Way' and 'Bitches Brew' by Miles Davis, any John Coltrane, or 70's Pharoah Sanders, such as 'Thembi'. Freddie Hubbard had some early 70 's classics such as 'Red Clay' and 'First Light'. All of Miles' sidemen have made a name for themselves such as Gary Bartz, Benny Maupin, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, etc.
