They are a rock band and the song is in the soft rock/pop category. It doesn't resemble country music as they didn't use the same instruments and equipment.

They could easily fall into the southern rock or country pop categories in ways like Alabama did when they started out.

Alabama reminds me of Skynyrd as they were influenced by them and formed a couple of years after they did. Nashville didn't accept them at first but eventually they did. They aren't traditional country like George Strait of the time but a southern rock band that exploded in country music.

I recently found this old song in a dusty stack of vinyl records. BW Stevenson "Down To The Station". Sounds sorta goofy after all these years but it's a pretty great little pop composition IMO. I remember this being called disco country back then.

I'm not sure if this song quite meets your standard, but it definitely fits this thread (and I kind of like it in the right mood): Mac Davis - Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me
Never heard this on classic country radio shows that played other Mac Davis songs, only discovered it recently on streaming and was surprised to find out it had been a pretty big hit for him.

So far it's the closest thing to the correct answer ITT. You're not going to find an exact twangy, Telecaster laden slide guitar ballad with guys hitting the hi hats on alternating downbeats.
Cake may have something in their repetoire, but then I'm sure we'll get bogged down in more semantics and minutiae ITT instead of just taking what's clearly a decent answer for what it is at face value.

Legitimate question for you… How many hours did you spend trolling through bad late 1970’s country music on YouTube before you stumbled upon this gem? Your ears must be bleeding!
