I hate it when people complain about how depressing his music is. It is mellow but if you just listen to it, it really is beautiful.

I love all of his albums, but my favorite is probably Either/Or, then From a Basement.

From a Basement is such a different album than all his others and I can only dream of the type of music he would have wrote after that. It has way more electric guitar and experimentation than any of his previous work, which has a lot to do with why I like it.

In other news, a group recently touched up the Figure 8 Wall: LINK

It really was disgusting that someone tagged the wall a few years ago.

See, but I like that kind of stuff. I could listen to Elliott Smith, Red House Painters, Damien Jurado and Nick Drake all day. Although I wouldn't call Nick Drake depressing.

Bon Iver's first album, For Emma is another one.

Red House Painters takes it to another level. Holy hell, that is some depressing stuff. In the right mood, it can be really good though. Katy Song is especially great (depressing as hell, but really pretty at the same time).

It can be depressing, but the melodies and his guitar playing are just so amazing...

It's hard for me to get in the mood to listen to his first two records though...

Love Elliot Smith, but my God... is he depressing or what?

Definitely agree but I love that kind of sound sometimes. There is one scene in Paranoid Park where Angeles is played and it makes you want to blow your brains out.

Yeah, I like Elliot Smith, but I can only take him in limited doses. It's just too depressing for me.

My favorite from the Rollercoaster album, but its rough. The story goes Mark and Katy for some reason never made it work, and Katy Song is about her going back to London. Anyway, in real life she actually died of cancer several years later, and a lot of the Sun Kil Moon album April is dedicated to her. Very sad stuff.

Saw him solo after the Ghosts of the Great Highway record came out at the Mermaid in NOLA... was about to fall asleep...

Some beautiful songs, but damn he's soooo boring live...

LA is probably my favorite and has the least depressing beat, which in turn is about suicide.
