Amen on this. When I got my Burny LP I was already shopping pickups before it even came in. Turns out the stock Burnys are the best sounding pickups I've ever had.

I am looking really hard at getting a G&L for a gigging guitar. Everyone says its a great bang for the buck.

G&L isn’t really known for their LP-style single cutaway guitars, though. Their brand was built on making fender style guitars, replicas of classic stratocaster and telecaster models. If someone is looking for one of those style guitars, G&L would be my first recommendation, but not for a single-cutaway LP style guitar with humbuckers. They may do that too, but it’s not their bread & butter.

Burny and fernandes LP’s are awesome, especially with the sustainer system, but they can be hard to find in the U.S. and the cost to ship them from Japan can eat away at the potential savings. If you can find a good used burny or fernandes here, I definitely recommend trying one out, but if your price point is $500, I wouldn’t think you could ship a decent one to the U.S. at that price point.

Why do people keep recommending SGs? He clearly wants a single cutaway, per the OP.

To the OP, I wouldn't buy a new Epiphone, or any Gibson without playing it first. Even though most big online stores offer free returns, you may go through several Epiphones before one has acceptable fretwork.

I feel like Phil McKnight on YouTube did a review on several LP style guitars. You may want to research that. I can't find it at the moment. It was a good video.

The Telecasters are really good, I can tell you that much. The G&L company was started by George Fullerton and Leo Fender.
The G&L stands for George and Leo.

So it took me a few days, but I finally have the guitar in my possession. I can’t even explain it but as soon as I saw it I knew it was the one. I’m actually so excited that I could barely play it. It’s a 2003 Epiphone Les Paul custom with Seymour Duncan’s in the neck and bridge along with Grover tuners and what appears to possibly be a bone nut. Sounds great and looks great too. I feel like I got a steal.

That's a beauty man, congrats. I agree with you, that nut does appear to be bone, or possibly the Nu-bone, which is really good.
Don't get greedy and forget, that guitar is for your stepdaughter.

Don't listen to Bob, that pick guard looks great.

I’m not sure what it is, but someone really babied this guitar and invested some coin in it. It sounds incredible too.

Believe me, I’m trying not to talk myself into keeping it for myself.

Yeah, I was just givin you crap. Gold would look good too, but there's nothing wrong with the black. It matches the pick ups and the knobs.

Yeah, if it plays and sounds as good as it looks, I would have a hard time givin it to anybody.
I don't know how that guitar came originally, but the gold saddle and pick up switch are nice touches.
I never have been in one of The Guitar Gallery stores, but I think I need to check them out soon.

About giving guitars as gifts, I like to give a good decent guitar to maybe a friend's kid, or one of my younger cousins, especially if their parents don't play, but the kid shows interest. That way the kid doesn't have to struggle on junk, the way that I did. If I hand them a nice one, I explain to them, you better play it, or I want it back. A really good guitar is not like other gifts, it's meant to be played. It's not a prop to make your room look cool.

It was my first experience as well. They even shipped the guitar to Pelham to save me the drive to T town. Their selection is nice, friendly staff and they also have a large assortment of vinyl as well.

I completely agree. I don’t normally give gifts like this, but she picks up things so fast that it didn’t take her very long to surpass the usefulness of her beginner squier strat. She needed a better guitar and I feel pretty comfortable that’s she’ll play the hell out of it and only get better.

That's great then, I'm sure she'll let you play it now and then.

You're giving a gift that is bigger than a guitar, and you get paid back, when you hear them playing well and loving it. That's a great feeling.

Been playing around with it for a few hours. The Rosewood fretboard on this guitar is smooth like glass. Hard to believe someone put such attention into this guitar only to sell it.
