Certainly the LP has its place in rock music. No other guitar gets the full-on crunch and sustain of those humbuckers in 10lbs of wood.

But with the right effects in-line a strat player can cop a LP tone. I don't think a LP player could use a pedal to get that thin, nasally tone of Sultans of Swing on his LP. You need those low-output single coils for that.

Advantage: STRAT

Nothin can emulate a strat on the neck/middle position running through a tube with a little od. SG and LP tones are distict as well, but most of what you get out of them can be dialed up one way or another on a strat.

Hold the fricking phone. Are you telling me this guy plays 100 riffs, 75 of them originally played on a strat, and the guy accurately replicated them.... ON A STRAT?????

If any of you think that a strat can accurately sound like a les paul, neck p/u on an overdriven solo, you are kidding yourselves. they both have their place, but a coil tap on a humbucker is more versatile than a stacked coil, or a mini humbucker in a strat.

the sound of a strat is uniquely its own, and fender has gone out of its way to not improve it, because their is no improving a tone when you are the first to do something, and you are known for the way the original sounds.

mahogany body, short scale, dual humbucker guitars, have changed pretty drastically with the times in relation, so its sometimes harder to reproduce all sounds with a modern one.

more than anything, what should be lauded is fenders amp versatility, as this shows that a good clean sound can be layered and tweaked to sound like most rock music with a minimal board in front of you.

people, go back and listen to this again, and stop and listen to the 20 odd songs that were originally played with sg's les paul's, or humbuckers and they stand out like sore thumbs. partially because they werent played on a fender sounding amp, but mainly because you lack the thicker sound of a humbucker.
