You guys are missing the point. I like all those too, but the Strat IS the most versatile.
if i was playing a strat, could you tell by the way it sounds?
peoples pre-conceived notions of the sound, based on the looks or brand of a guitar are so silly. i find it funny that aside from ibanez, and fender, you find very little brand loyalty in basses. the better basses win out consistently. as such, the quality of basses when you walk into a store usually out rivals the quality of guitars. granted, its starting to even out, but active electronics, 5 piece unpainted necks, neck thru bodies, alternate tone woods on the wings, etc... much higher quality of an instrument than a similarly priced guitar. but things are starting to change for the better the past few years.

thats probably the closest bass comparison to the strat. very recognizable tone, and once its played with that sound, it takes some fidgeting to make something else produce similar tones. hofner violin bass, with flatwounds may be a close sound.

the tone is just amazing
I have a hollowbody bass as well that I picked up from ebay for $200.... I have flatwounds on it, and it sounds really good as well. it's my backup.

there are 4 or 5 guitars that i WILL own in my lifetime, and a vintage rickenbacker 4000 is one of them.
esp white explorer from mid 90s. gibson v from 80s. 60s-70s strat. caparison dellinger.

I will always love my Strat. Also, homeboy was money, especially his transition from U2 to GnR.
