I'm looking to venture into the guitar world. Mainly to pick up a new hobby but I also have a 3 year old son and I'd like to get him interested in music as soon as possible. It's something I wish I had done sooner and I'd like to be a little familiar with it all by the time he can play.

I dabbled in bass and drums during high school (32 now) so I have a little bit of experience playing. I never learned how to read music, only tabs.

I listen to mainly metal/rock/death metal so I'd prefer my set up to be geared more towards that sound (for now).

I don't know much about what I'm looking at, but here is what I have picked out as a guitar/amp combo just to jam around the house. Keep in mind I am left-handed so my options are way more limited.

Guitar
Amp

Any other recommendations or tips on gear would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have never played a schecter guitar, younger guys seem to really like them. Looks like a good choice.

Don’t buy a new Schecter. Buy used. I bet the GC website is full of them. Let somebody else pay to drive it off the lot.

GC has a 45 day no questions return on used items. If the guitar you buy has ANYTHING you don’t like bring it back.

If you are wanting to spend $500 on a guitar, I'd definitely go used.

Probably would hit ebay up and look for an:

ESP LTD EC-1000

Jackson Pro King V (I've seen these go for $500)

Or a Burny Les Paul

As far as amp..if you're wanting to go small combo/practice in that budget..

Id maybe go with a BOSS Katana 50 till you upgrade to a head and 4x12 cab. And $30 more, you basically get 30W more than the orange.

Here's a video of it being used by a respected YouTube metal product tester.

Sweet, I'll check eBay. Hopefully I can find lefty versions of those.

Also, props for linking Ola Englund! I've been subscribed to him and watching his content for awhile now

Check reverb for used items. You can get some pretty damn good deals.

So a fellow lefty? Reverb and ebay are going to be good places to look for lefties.

Def don't buy new before you look used. I'm not big on Schecter but you could probably find a good used for considerably less than new. Schecter has been doing lefts for a while so they're out there.

ETA: also, if you're a lefty, do not under any circumstances look at right handed guitars and say, oh I like that one, now I'll go find it in left.

It doesn't work like that. They make what they make in left and that's all they make. Sucks but it is what it is.

I 2nd the Boss Katana. It can easily do metal too. Plus you can download all kinds of patches for free. There are some really good ones out there too.

GC is great for used purchases. Especially if you are reasonably near a store. Have the guitar shipped to a store. Store to store shipping is free or near nothing depending on what u buy. Open the guitar in the store. If something major is wrong they’ll address it or you can refuse right there and start the return. Don’t like it, bring it back to that store. They handle the exchange and just hang it on their wall. What you hate, somebody will like. So they don’t care. More stuff to hang on their wall. The most you may ever eat is a shipping cost. 25 bucks?

I’ve been to the Guitar Center on Florida Blvd many times so whatever I decide to order I’ll have it shipped there so I can inspect everything with someone else. Good call!
