The reason why so many pick Cobain is because of his death. People have such a high fascination with it. If Cobain were still alive today he wouldn't have close to the recognition he has now. He is in nearly every top 50/100 greatest guitarist list I've seen, which is not only a joke, but a complete slap in the face of so many better artist. Sure, he wrote good songs, but he, and his music are magnified more by his story. Grohl gets my vote here.

Grohl is indeed more humorous than Cobain was. I'll give him that.

I just want one person to point out exactly where cobain showed himself to be a great songwriter. Eddie vedder Shannon hoon layne staley bradley nowell all wrote better songs in his same time period yet cobain is considered this amazing songwriter??? How

Ridiculously lazy opinion... I cant think of one FF record that was better than any Nirvana record (and they've had chance to evolve as a band in the past 15 years). Although, I'll add the drumming Grohl provided was a vast improvement over his predecessor on Bleach.

I honestly think, that Nirvana or KC (doubt theyd still be together) would have evolved greatly in the past 15+ years... and would have been just is relevant as ever in RnR...

Well Grohl by no stretch of the imagination is a great songwriter. Foo Fighters are super overrated. They've never brought anything new to the table. Nothing groundbreaking...

My entire post was lazy I guess. I think I stated why I feel this way. Sorry that you disagree and feel like I put no effort forth.

I totally agree. I think it's safe to say Nirvana's most known, and successful song was Smells Like Teen Spirit. Read those lyrics, they're nonsensical crap. A random word generator spits out stuff like that all the time. People thing it's "deep" because it's so ambiguous that you can see what ever you want in them.

Then read the lyrics to something like The Pretender or The Best of You. I just see a little more of a thought out message there.

Cobain's success in a large part was due to his troubled angst ridden persona. If he was as happy go lucky as Grohl seems to be, his lyrics wouldn't stand up for shite.

You want somebody to prove their in-depth objective opinion when you just basically did the same by saying Vedder, Hoon, Staley, Nowell all wrote better songs without your own reasoning?

I like pizza but somehow people think sushi is amazing?

Not that I necessarily disagree with your statement, but pointing out a flaw with that question.

The best I heard it put was a critic calling FF "jock rock" one time.

I don't even see it as a contest and Grohl probably would agree.Daves obviously a versatile musician and a top 3 living drummer.But as an influence and iconic status?

Cobain.hands down

You don't think that his death has anything to do with why he is so polarizing? Do you really feel he was that good of a guitar player? Because I sure don't.

No doubt, KC's songs appeal to me more than those other guys combined.

In fact, after Nirvana, Mudhoney was the next best band out of the Seattle area. Although, the fact that all those bands were lumped together as one sound was laughable...

In life:

Cobain = Icon
Grohl = Jock Crush

In death:

Cobain = Icon
Grohl = Nearly forgotten
