I'm not too much a fan for frank zappa's singing, but it's hard to deny how tight they all played together, how good they were technically, and how creative they were
I put frank and the mothers over rush and the dead and the like that usually get listed as being technically good.
i expect the typical responses of "beatles" "allman bros" etc. those comments are kinda like "piihb" on the OT

Absolutely some of the greatest musicians during their time.
Zappa was very demanding of the people that played with him.
IMO, he was one of the great geniuses of American music history.
I think I read once that at the time Freak Out! was released (his first record), he had only been playing the electric guitar for a year and a half. He had played a variety of instruments prior to that, and was writing music for a while.
But go listen to Freak Out! and think about that. Unbelievable.

I've been on a big Zappa kick lately. I just listened to Freak Out and Burnt Weeny Sandwich last night. It's hard to compare Zappa to anyone else. he's so completely different from everything. I have to be in the right mood.
Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar is one of the greatest guitar albums ever.

not really the mothers, but his later bands.

creative? they put out more music than newer acts can only dream about
I'm so glad to have seen him in BR in the late 70's ....

Well yeh they were the best. It was either play it perfectly or get fired. Love me some Zappa.

You could put Herbie and the Headhunters up there. Not as weird, but equally as tight, experimental, and innovative.
