I have not seen that performance before. Will have some beers and run it through the TV and surround this weekend.
Thanks for the link.

Awesome performance--died a few short months later. A friend of mine-a photographer-has some huge blowups of pics from that set.
Ironically, on my mere 1,000th post, I titled my subject almost identically to yours. The thread was axed due to its "non-specificity".

So sick. Thanks for this.
The downvotes prove that really dumb people populate this board.
Who, if anyone, would you put ahead of SRV guitarist wise?

Guitar playing wise Stevie was a true musical genius. Some who don't play guitar can't quite wrap their heads around what makes him untouchable but it has to do with fluidity and just never running dry on something to express on the instrument.
Having said that, I never thought he had anywhere near the same knack with songwriting and his singing voice was always pretty subpar to my particular taste. Those things carry a lot of weight for what I value in music.
(ETA: I didn't downvote BTW.)

I agree with what you wrote (although I must say I love his songs that he wrote), that's why I asked about him guitar wise, not as a whole. His ability to transition from playing a scale lower on the neck to hitting a jazzy chord high on the neck is just insane. And then hitting little flicks of notes all in between.
I used to have a dvd of him back in the day before YouTube was big playing at El Mocambo, I think it was. There was one part on there, I think during "Mary had a little lamb" that he played faster and better than anything I hadever seen. I'll try and find it.
So Excited
here it is. 2:50 mark just gnarly

I always thought his singing voice was pretty amazing for the blues/rock music he performed. That plus his guitar, or ESPECIALLY because of his guitar, made him great.
I remember BB King saying something about him. All guitarists play within certain parameters on solos within the structure of a song. King said that Vaughn just "never got lost". He was always in the moment whereas many guitarists take the easy route too often.

that is a perfect description of it. Makes me think he must have always been thinking like 4 measures ahead. Never a moment in his solos that lacks.
Many guys that solo have entertaining parts mixed with kinda run of the mill stuff. Stevie's entire solos were can't miss music
