If I'm not mistaken, Stone Gossard wrote the music and Vedder/Cornell wrote the lyrics to the two songs pretty much simultaneously.
Times of Trouble is a far, far better song.

Pretty sure this is correct. I like footsteps. It’s part of the mamasan trilogy of Alive, once and footsteps.
Something about an individual who is tormented in his youth, then goes on a murderous rampage then finally is on death row.
