Maybe jazz fest needs to find a main line band that was born after 1960.

This. I have never understood why JF relies so heavily on the geriatric performers. One of them is going to die on stage one day. They need to go younger.

They priced out the youngins, so they rely on boomers buying tickets. Boomers are old, and the bands they grew up loving are even older. It’s just the nature if the beast. Most people are most fond of the bands they liked when they were teens/early 20’s. As rock diversified, the appeal of bands became more segmented and niche, meaning most bands from later eras don’t have the universal appeal of those early 60’s groups like The Who, The Beatles, and The Stones. Plus, thanks to classic rock radio and general terrestrial radio suckiness, boomers rarely hear newer music of any quality even if they’re open to it. It is what it is. Musicians get old and die. Music is a rough life.

We can argue that Jazz Fest needs to go younger, but what bands from the last 10-20 years can sell enough tickets at that price point to be worth booking who don’t already play Jazz Fest regularly?

wonder what jazz fest will look like in 10 years when all of these old bands are dead and gone?

I wonder the same, especially with fests like hangout and voodoo going more heavily into electronica and the warp tour ending. It seems like the metal-centered fests like “Welcome to Rockville” are still doing ok, but I just don’t know how sustainable the current festival model is without the baby boomer bands anchoring them. Prices have to come down and lineups need to get younger, but that likely means either going into more niche appeal or getting more into electronic music, which I personally cannot stand to listen to.

I think fests need to go more the sxsw strategy of cultivating talent. People go to sxsw expecting to hear up and coming bands they have never heard before and never would have likely heard elsewhere. Bands play sxsw hoping to get discovered. I think that model could work for large festivals like jazz fest. Get indie, niche, or up and coming bands that fit a certain sound that you want paired with a couple major headliners and the local staples and pitch the fest as THE place to discover underground rock n roll, jazz, and blues.

Face the music. There aren't too many younger bands/artists that are headliner worthy. Think of how atrocious JF would be if the headliners mainly consisted of CHVHURCES, Imagine Dragons, Skrillex, Pitbull, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, and fricking Kid Cudi.

So true. I have no idea how ACL and SXSW keep going year after year.

John Mayer will lead a supergroup of the shitty musicians left over from great bands & ruin their legacy.

Millennials just want cool lights and Molly. Quint Davis could learn a thing or two about booking music acts imho

would people be upset if it's Vampire Weekend or the Raconteurs?

Their options have to be fairly limited with the date being a month away.
