Gets a 10 from Pitchfork
First album to do so in like 10 years.

99 score on metacritic

I consider When the Pawn to be one of the best album's in the past 25 years. I listened to the first two songs and it's might be TOO weird (which is saying a lot). Thoughts?

Just mentioned that it was weird. Strikes me as a typical "it's super weird, obscure and discordant so it's obviously brilliant" music critic thing

I love Fiona Apple and also think very highly of "When the Pawn.

Listened to about 3 tracks and didn't really care for it.

I listened to it once. Not sure what to make of it yet. It’s definitely quirky, but I enjoyed some of the tracks. This is the first Fiona Apple I ever listen to outside of her Across the Universe cover.

But yeah the hype is huge for this album.

FWIW I got a little more into it. Ultimately though, the title track was the only thing I found interesting enough to listen to twice.

Relay caught my attention the most on my listen.

Listening now.

I think this one is going to take a few listens to appreciate. I don't hate it, but it's not really registering with me on first listen.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters sounds like the name of a Spinal Tap album.

I've given it one listen. I enjoyed a few tracks and was not sure on the others. Not a big fan of "Ladies." It just seemed kinda lame.

I'll give it a few more listens.

Seaward, check out Extraordinary Machine. It's a great album all the way through.

I’m not here to knight for Pitchfork. I find my tastes over the past few years differs from them more than ever and I rarely even read their reviews. But it looks like they have given 17 albums over a 8 so far this year and only 2 or 3 are rap.

Youre right I think its actually meta critic that always has every single rap release in the 80s+. And i like rap but 9 out of every 10 rap albums is pure sewage

I’ve given this album a few listens and definitely enjoy it. Her vocals are really dynamic. I like the spacious, percussive sound. The songwriting is interesting with a healthy dose of crazy. Heavy Balloon is probably my favorite track.

Pitchfork has definitely shifted more rap/pop oriented over the past few years. Looking at their ratings so far this year, it’s probably the most I’ve agreed with them in awhile. And I did discover the awesome Dogleg album from them. So I’ll give them props for that.

Just heard a radio dj drooling over it as he referenced the 10. Then he played it. I must not be high brow enough.

I absolutely adore her first three albums.

The last one, I couldn't stand.

What I reading here and in the reviews isn't making me optimistic I'll like this one either.

Listened this morning. Won't listen again. No song stood out. I was in college when her first album came out and I like her. We have obviously diverged in music tastes :)
