Fender. Smarter FUTURE guitar purchase?

Telecaster or Stratacaster?
Which is more versatile? Can the Strat only play rock? Does a Telecaster limit what you can play? Only blues or country and limited on rock?
Looking at an electric one day. Would be second hand and would be willing to buy a Mexican. Is an American Fender worth the extra cash for a plinking beginner like me. Will the difference be lost on my poor ear and inept hands?
My progress has been slow. I sound better but I keep losing focus on boring practice, going to a YouTube video lesson of a song that is beyond my ability and learning a handful of notes or snippets of a riff.

either guitar will cover rock, country blues. neither are going to do hard rock unless they've got humbuckers.
the top end mexican made guitars are quality instruments. if it's got a proper setup, it will play every bit as good as some of the american models. you'd probably want to eventually change the pickups to improve the sound of it though.
if you can find a japanese built strat, buy it. they're fantastic.

the strat is more versatile, mainly because it has a tremolo and you have more options for replacement pickups. I can't stand having nothing but true single coils, the hum will drive you crazy as soon as you put on a little distortion. I have 3 stacked coil humbuckers in my strat (the fender SCN pickups).
I'm not a fan real fenders untill you hit the high dollar guitars. Fender puts a rediculously thick poly finish on them so that you get zero wood in the sound.
Lots of other makers give you a better deal. I have a yamaha pacifica that plays like a dream and the trem stays in tune well, though the pickups are only so-so. If you are looking for a super cheapie guitar, try rondomusic.com.

I have 2 of them. I prefer the look of a Tele, but the sound of a Strat.

A tele is a special thing, but has a bit more of a specific sound
Also if you can find an HSS strat (with one humbucker) you can get a heavier sound if you want
I think the newest strat necks are more playable for beginners too

Like others have said, the Strat's versatility is why you should get one of those before getting a Tele...
So much to do with putting the pickups out of phase and getting softer sounds, plus you can upgrade your bridge pickup to a higher output one to give you that boost. Won't sound like a Les Paul, but overall you will get more out of a Strat than the Tele.

Everything rondo is pretty solid. I almost bought an Agile LP before. I'll probably get a custom Agile for myself as a graduation present.

I had a strat, but dropped two humbuckers in it. Not as versatile, but damn its mean!

I like both and play a 62 strat. With the right amp you can play plenty of styles. Try both and see which feels better for you and fits what sound you want. There is WAY more to sound than just the guitar. Setup, strings, pedals, amp, picks....all can make big changes. Personally I think a strat is more versatile but it's really just preference.
