What you got? Doing some listening through my REM albums now and I may have to go with New Adventures in Hi-Fi, though I can do just about all of them.

Probably would go

1) New Adventures
2) Automatic for the People
3) Monster

I think that versatility makes REM great. They can give you a lot of looks.

I grew up listening to tons of music around the house and in the car via my folks. I was born in 86, and my dad was heavy on REM, and mostly the early and mid-80s stuff that you mentioned, from Murmur to Dead Letter Office.

When I started buying CDs at 9-10, they were coming off of Out of Time. So I got heavy into the next wave of 90s albums (Automatic, Monster and New Adventures).

I'm guessing we have about a 10-year age gap between us.

I like this list. Although, I hate not having Fables in there. I might sub fables for reckoning.

Also dead letter office - it may be considered a greatest hits, but it's really a B side album. It's got my favorite REM song on it - Carnival of Sorts.

15 years...

I think there is something to hearing records in the year and in the order they came out, that give you a different perspective than someone who retroactively listens to them...

I am not saying one way or the other is better, just a different perspective is all..

I try to go chronological when I have the down time to go through albums while I work. I'm through Murmur, Reckoning and Fables right now. Life's Rich Pageant and Dead Letter Office going to get knocked out today. Means next Monday morning will start with Document.

Yeah, the gothic blue on both covers (one´s a gargoyle, the other, covered in kudzu. Honestly I don´t know which is more ominous. heh.), threw off my memory (which habitually is very good).

Murmur
Reckoning
Green

I think Green is such a terribly underrated album. It's a freaking masterpiece. I mean, its no Reckoning (what is?), but it gets such a bad rap for Stand... which I will argue is a better song than it gets for as well.

I love Green... I actually even really like Out of Time and Automatic, which many old school fans dismiss...

Monster is where they kinda lost me... or I got burned out on them, I dunno...

I love Monster but not Out of Time... same time period though. But Automatic is pretty damn great. Definitely my favorite late period REM album.

Like TFTC said, y'all all were listening to the mid-80s REM during it's prime. When I became a teen in the 90s, I was listening to their current stuff in addition to their 80s releases. So I loved stuff like New Adventures. But that's when all the longtime fans were getting burned out...

I guess I'm like the younger Pearl Jam fans who would say Binaural and Yield are their favorite albums, which I could never comprehend.
