Well, Tiger Army did have some AFI members play in their band.

Another emo band that I loved but not too many people knew about was Park. This song is super emo but the singers voice isn't which is nice.

And early Bayside was definitely emo. They have become a pop punk band now, much like how Saves the Day has changed from emo to pop punk, although I never really classified STD as emo, more punk with semi-emo lyrics.


ETA: Geoff Kresge is still with Tiger Army and he was with AFI from 92-97.

got to it before i did. the bands sound similar becase nick13 sounds so much like havok on their earlier albums that they seem like side projects of one another. in the end the bands diverged and went distinct ways, but for a while, i wouldnt doubt for a minute they shared members for small periods of time because of the similarities.

i had a friend who somehow knew the managers and booking agents for every underground band. he had a deal with all the touring bands that he would offer them hot meals, places to stay, liquor, etc... but they had to play a show in his living room. im talking every weekend there was at least one show at his house and he never spent a dime because we would all bring the beer and ingredients to cook as our admission price.

i saw this band there and it was amazing. 30 minute set tops. fricking mayhem. i would never volunteer to listen to this music on my own, but something was very electric about this bands show.

Then what is screamo? I guess I never knew what it is.

The lyrics play a big role in what I think is emo.

It doesn't have to be whiney voices to be emo. In A Synonym for Acquiesce off of Bayside's first album, the chorus is:

That is pretty damn emo.

They definitely had emo lyrics in their early days even though they didn't sound like an emo band.
