music is meant to be shared. I don’t have an issue with new audiences being exposed to them Then cover it at your concert. Don’t get into a studio and record the exact same song but spending even more on production to try and make it even more produced and radio friendly.
I’ve got no dog in this fight. I think Tracy Chapman is a great songwriter and this is a great song. I think Combs’ version is good. But I read about his history with the song. He learned it as a kid listening to his dad play and sing it. He began singing it just like you said, in concert, with an introduction telling people what the song means to him. It got such a great reception that he decided to put it on his album. According to what I read, it wasn’t meant to be a single. It was a an organic reaction by fans that got it to the top of the streaming/download charts. And from there, a few radio stations started playing it, and it just sort of snowballed. I think it’s a pretty cool story, personally.

I don’t listen to him but I found it interesting that he kept the song from the pov of a woman- exactly the same as Tracy wrote it- “I got a job as a checkout girl”. Respect to him for that

It’s good, I like Luke combs. As far as guys that became popular not that long ago I like him and sturgill.
They are the only new country guys I’ve bought albums of. Always preferred the old.
But I’m not ashamed to say I play this album sitting out by the pool.

The original is a masterpiece
Damn right
Wife had on the CMA fest concert for a bit last night…I know it’s popular to shite on current country but my God it’s so bad.

If Tracy still owns it, she's thanking him all the way to the bank and cashing some nice checks.
She also gets professional pride.
Fast Car has been a top ten hit three different times. The original when it came out, the original in 2011 after it was used on American Idol, and the country version.

Oh here is what she said.

On July 6, the reclusive Chapman told Billboard, “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there. I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.’”

Nothing like a country music hack latching onto a truly great song. I’m glad that Chapman will make some money though.
