I was watching the Country Music Awards and saw a cover of the Don Williams song “Tulsa Time” and everytime the camera scanned the crowd.....not one popular artist knew the words.

People like Miranda Lambert, Thomas Rhett, etc.

They were trying to sing but had no idea what words were next.

That is a classic country song.

Sad situation, correct?

There is a total disconnect between modern pop "country" and old school country.

Agree. It is not like they are complicated:

Livin' on Tulsa time
Livin' on Tulsa time
Gonna set my watch back to it
'Cause you know I've been through it
Livin' on Tulsa time

Livin' on Tulsa time
Livin' on Tulsa time
Gonna set my watch back to it
'Cause you know I've been through it
Livin' on Tulsa time

But somehow that stumps the Keith Urban's of the world.

Maybe they've heard Clapton's version?

Even in his version, he sings the lyrics as they were written

Sorry. I meant that possibly more of these 'country' stars had heard Clapton's version, since they don't seem to have listened to country music. Poor phrasing on my part.

Modern country music makes me put "Backside of 30" by John Conlee on repeat just to remind myself of what country music used to be.

What gets me is how modern country, and it’s fans love to pretend that they love stuff like Hank Williams and George Jones, but they would obviously hate that music if they ever listened to it.

People have been compaining about country as long as I can remember.

Even Waylon sang about it.
