Was digging thru records the other night and pulled this one out. It's been many a year since I listened to it. I forgot how good it was.
How would you rate Backless in Clapton's hefty catalog?

Backless is a solid album.
It was never going to live up to “Slowhand” but it is still a very enjoyable record.
It’s very much in the vein of his country-rock-ballad phase he went through. Not much, if any, guitar heroics on this album. I very much liked this phase of him.
“Watch our for Lucy” is a track in a style Clapton never really did much, it’s a tight sound.
“Tell me that you love me” is a catchy love song with slick production.
“Tulsa Time” is a Don Williams song that Clapton covered, and it’s a driving song with cool slide guitar. Became a staple of his Live shows after this album.
“Promises” is one the mans very best songs he ever wrote in his entire career. Just a great song that is ageless.
And finally, “If I don’t be there by morning” is a cool song with some nice guitar fills. But this track really shines on the “Just One Night Live Album” where Albert Lee plays with Clapton & Lee tears this song apart with some country solos.

It kind of depends on how you define "Clapton's catalog." Are we including Cream and Derek and the Dominoes or are we just talking about albums with the words Eric Clapton somewhere on the cover? I think it is a solid Sunday afternoon chill out album but I wouldn't want it playing in my car if I'm making a 600 mile drive through the middle of the night somewhere in the middle of Nebraska.

Good cover of JJ Cale's "I'll Make Love to You Anytime"

When I think of Clapton I remember Yardbirds, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Cream & finally Blind Faith. As a solo artist, I think he no longer had that drive...maybe in his earlier bands he was pushed more and we heard his best guitar work. Ever since his solo work, he became more laid back, no longer a 'guitar hero'...
