Elvis question

So when Elvis was really big, he sang blues-based songs. Then when he came back, he ditched it for a big brass or more heavy sound. Music was never the same. Why did he do that? I mean Blues Elvis would've never put out something like Kentucky Rain or Suspicious Minds

Elvis was never just a rockabilly or blues singer
Two of his favorite singers growing up were Dean Martin and Mario Lanza
By the '70s, much of EP's audience was older and more likely to accept (buy) country or horn-based R&B than electric guitar-based rockabilly

Elvis also did a lot of spiritual and gospel stuff. He was so versatile it didn't really matter what he sang. He had a rare voice that could handle any genre equally well.

Although, imo, he was never better than he was doing the early rock 'n roll/rockabilly act. Watch those early live videos and it's amazing. Surpassed only by Jerry Lee Lewis when he was on fire.

johnny cash was never better than in the sun days. a stripped down sound appeals to music people. a big bombastic sound appeals to the masses....aka $$$$$$.
