Drummer ear protection

My son has been practicing using regular earmuffs but now he's wanting to start playing along with music. What are the options for having ear protection while at the same time piping in tunes to play along with? Do they just have to be compatible with a computer headphone jack or iphone lightning jack?

Pluggs

Musicians ear plugs. I use these at live shows too. They don't muffle sound as much as just reduce the volume.

What lazy said. You can get a good pair of hi-fidelity musicians earplugs for about $15-$20. I use Hearos.
They have been great for me on stage. They cut a lot of that hi register noise and I can still hear my bass and the kick well. I can actually hear the articulation in my bass better with the plugs and it improves my playing while also saving my hearing.
First time I wore them I took them out for the songs I sing lead on as it was easier for me to sing with them out. The noise seemed deafening when they were out. Should have gotten them sooner.

Thanks, all. I'll check these plugs out. I was under the impression that he had to have some large earmuffs that port the sound in via an audio jack of sorts. These look much better and I'm sure he'll like them more as well.

Pricey but the Bose noise canceling headphones are excellent. I use them whenever playing along to tunes I’m learning/practicing . Can hear my kit very well yet significantly reduces the hi pitch tones from the cymbals.
