Can you elaborate on this?
are you implying you can't tell the difference between uncompressed and a 128k mp3?

I'm asking you to elaborate on what your friend told you that allowed to "notice the cut-off". If you could do that instead of responding to a question with a question, that would help move things along more smoothly.

oh yeah. at first I thought 128kb mp3s sounded as good as a CD
then a friend (ben folds' studio sound engineer) taught me how to notice the cut-off and I realized just how awful they sounded.

Are your listening sources mostly CD'S or do you prefer to listen to FLAC files or lossles Mp3 files?
Honestly, I usually listen to MP3 for portability. If I want quality, I'll go 5.1.

he pointed out what it sounded like when some of the dynamic range was removed.
then we listened to the same track from the audio CD.
it was the audio equivalent of looking at a heavily pixelated photograph.

I've never taken this particular taste test. I'll try it out.
