It's brutal these days

I am not a "get off my lawn" type when it comes to music but damn Top 40 music these days is total garbage. It has nothing to do with my musical tastes but just the complete lack of originality in these hits. They all sound the fricking same. It's all rap/hip hop music with auto tuned voices and shitty, generic beats in the background with shitty lyrics.

So my question is how the frick do these shitty arse songs even chart in the Top 40? Who actually listens to this shite?

I used to be able to listen to Top 40 stations with no issue at all, but now its something I no longer do. The music sucks. I remember when Top 40 music was actually good music, creative music that took creativity, talent and skill. Now its just an endless conga line of rap/hip hop/club music.

Nearly any and all females under the age of 25 seem to.

I'm doing everything possible to reverse the brainwashing which has impacted my girlfriend's musical taste.

She loves the Beatles and some classic rock, but she also regularly listens top such Top-40 stations.

I played Nirvana's MTV Unplugged album on a drive down to New Orleans and all she did was bitch and moan. "I do not like this at all. This guy cannot sing. Yada, yada, yada." Granted, Cobain's voice is hardly melodic, but I repeatedly explained that it's the feeling and pain in his voice that makes it worth hearing. She wasn't having it.

My wife eats it up. I do my best to just pretend that the radio is not there when we are in the vehicle.

What about Pearl Jam, AIC, Soundgarden or even RHCP? I assume by "classic rock" she digs Queen, Zeppelin and such.

This is the song that inspired me to make this thread. It is terrible. The worst song I've ever heard. Someone Please explain how it would take any talent to make that song. Same lyric over and over with a generic synth beat. Plus Selena Gomez isn't even attractive.

My gym usually plays a house CD but today they didn't and instead played a Top 40 radio station and I had to listen to the crap my entire workout. I wanted to drill my ear drums out. All the songs sounded the same. Don't think I heard a single song from a white musician. I hate Taylor Swift but her music is at least original and requires talent, would be 1000x better than what I heard this morning.

To be honest, no. Top 40 radio isn't as popular as you think it is. First off, radio is suffering declining listenership due to podcasts, satellite radio, and online music. But hwen people do listen to the radio, the most popular format is news... with a whopping 8.9% of the market.

Top 40 is #2 at 8.2% and #1 among people aged 18-34 at 12.40%. But even those numbers suggest that top 40 is not exactly blowing away other genres. Every little niche gets serviced.

Top 40 has, honestly, always been terrible and will continue to be terrible. That's because it is aimed primarily at teenagers who, as a rule, have terrible taste in everything. We'll eventually limit the playlist from each era to include only the best stuff which is a little boring, but allows us to block out the worst parts of history.

106.9 and 107.5 here in nashville pretty much have a 6-song playlist it seems like. this summer it was:

- cant keep my hands to myself
- dont let me down
- pillow talk (or whatever that shitty song is)
- work work work work work work work (both versions)
- stressed out

(repeat those 5 above until your brain turns to mush)

She loves Queen. And I think she likes the RHCP a little bit.

However, I'm hesitant to expose her to Alice in Chains because Staley's voice is quite "unique" in its own right.

Is it really Top 40?

When I let the kids listen to what I assume is Top 40 they will play some songs twice in the same hour.

I gave up on "classic rock" stations because they play the same songs. No deep cuts. I started listening to a few stations that play "60,70 and 80's" with some 90's mixed in.
It's rock, pop, r&b, disco and acoustic.
It's awesome to hear the Beatles, AC/DC, Prince and Hot Chocolate in the same set.

There was a day when you'd still get good music mixed in with bad on Top 40. You'd get a good variety of music instead of just one genre, "club" music is what I like to call it, music you'd hear on a dance floor on a night club seems to be all Top 40 is about these days.

I remember listening to Top 40 stations in the late 90s/early 2000s and you'd still get good music mixed in there.
