Don't let the fact that it's way overplayed cloud your judgment. It's a great song.
Agreed. People dont like it anymore because its over-played by every coverband. But for me, it's a timeless song that I'll never get tired of.

It's geographically impossible to head west from the Cumberland Gap and end up in Johnson City.
In all seriousness, Ketch said in an interview several years back that the geographical goof was left in because lyrically the word "west" sounds better in a song than "east".
It still drives me crazy to hear it.... for obvious reasons.

It's not bad,but he was putting together a soundtrack for a movie, and really, that song didn't fit in the soundtrack.
I first heard it on the bootleg collection, and there were some notes explaining about it.
There are no telling how many great Ideas that Dylan has just set aside in his time.

Never heard this song before.
So I went to YouTube to check it out--over 30M views--and nope, still not familiar with it.
Oh well, you can't be familiar with them all.
And it's not my cup of tea, so nothing lost.

Yes. Rucker covered OCMS who were covering Dylan. Now every shitty bar band in the country covers the song, too.
Technically, OCMS weren't covering Dylan..since he only wrote a bit of the chorus. They wrote the rest of the song that everyone else has since played into the freaking ground.

It wouldn't surprise me if Old Crow has to split the royalties with Dylan then, since he technically shares writing credit.
But yeah, that song is done. Ten years ago it was great to hear, especially when they came to play in Johnson City. But now people attribute it more towards Rucker, who unfortunately has ran it into oblivion.

How many people actually believe the kid above that says he never heard it?
You have got to be kidding me....

Marco isn't a kid and he has a pretty extensive music collection. He probably just doesn't listen to this type of music.

Song is way too stupid for Dylan to have written.
I'm a big Dylan fanboy, but ever heard Wiggle Wiggle?
quote:
Wiggle Wiggle WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a gypsy queen
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle all dressed in green
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle ’til the moon is blue Wiggle ’til the moon sees you
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle in your boots and shoes
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, you got nothing to lose
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a swarm of bees Wiggle on your hands and knees
Wiggle to the front, wiggle to the rear
Wiggle ’til you wiggle right out of here Wiggle ’til it opens, wiggle ’til it shuts
Wiggle ’til it bites, wiggle ’til it cuts
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle—you can raise the dead
Wiggle ’til you’re high, wiggle ’til you’re higher
Wiggle ’til you vomit fire
Wiggle ’til it whispers, wiggle ’til it hums
Wiggle ’til it answers, wiggle ’til it comes
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like satin and silk
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a pail of milk
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, rattle and shake
Wiggle like a big fat snake

What about those cotton fields "down in Louisiana, just about a mile from Texarkana"?
Find that on a map.

I have always figured that that was a song written more about panhandlers, liars and bull shitters, than about any cottonfields, the line you included is what gives it away.

I don't get that from the lyrics.
Leadbelly wrote it, and he lived around Mooringsport, within 20 miles or so of the LA/AR border north of Shreveport, so he should have known that Texarkana was more than a mile from LA. Wikipedia says he originally sang "down in Louisiana, just ten miles from Texarkana" but that is also impossible, as Texarkana is 30 miles from the LA border.
I think it's just one of many examples of lyrics written to sound or flow better despite a lack of factual accuracy. "Just fifty-three miles from Texarkana" doesn't have the same zip.

True...but, the trucker telling him this had just took a nice long toke...so he was probably higher than a bat's arse at the time and didn't know East from West.
