The Righteous Brothers are not the original recording artists of this song. A few others recorded it around 1955 which is a decade before The Righteous Brothers recorded it. Heck, the Todd Duncan version was nominated for an academy award for best song in 1955.

Most sources agree it was actually produced by Bill Medley of tRBs

Per Medley, Spector did not want them to cut it in the first place and opposed releasing it, grudgingly putting it out as a B side. DJs rejected the A side, flipped the record over and discovered "UM".

Medley also plays piano on the track: "If I'd known it was going to be such a big hit, I'd've hired a better piano player."
