I'm still shocked hes auctioning off his black strat.
Same. I guess that speaks to the quality of his custom shop model. I hope it doesn't mean he's going to quit touring.
I'm curious as to the cheapest that one of these guitars will go for.

Some of the acoustics will go in the $4k to $6k range, I'll wager. I haven't seen the full list.

I was thinking the same thing. I guess Fender got that one right.
The sad thing is that it's likely that none of these guitars will ever be played again.

Not only has the FCS been getting things right in recent years, CBS-era Fender was nothing really special for the most part. It was about quotas, quantity versus quality and you'd find trash alongside treasure in sequential serial numbers. Reputation-wise, neck/body joint fits were horridly loose and fueled tuning problems, finishes were goopy thick, the guitars were generally heavy (it was the rage for all makers in the 70s) and they were bright sounding sonically. Not that they were all bad, I have played KILLER examples of CBS-era strats and teles, but few will deny it was the worst era/lineage of their production for consistently good product. If you gave me a sight-unseen choice between a 1970s strat and a modern FCS strat, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat, without a second's hesitation. It's simply a better guitar, a better tool.
Think about it ... if DG's black strat was so, so special as a guitar, a tool, why has it worn neck after neck and seen body and electronics mods that even DG himself can't keep up with from memory? It apparently wasn't perfect as it sat haha. But he can turn it into possibly a million dollars for a worthy charity or cause, with no detriment to his creative being or needs? Again a no-brainer IMHO.

Quite true, which is why I've replaced nearly every component on mine all the way down to the string trees.

Excellent point.

Well, relative to their peers, Gilmour and Waters were very "choir boy"ish. Particularly in response to Syd's LSD-fueled meltdown (he had a very serious mental illness and was a heavy user of LSD), Roger and David as leaders of the band were vocally anti-drug (elements of Comfortably Numb at least partially inspired by an incident where Roger was shot up with something before a show in Philadelphia, ostensibly against his will), at least beyond cigarettes, booze and weed. Now, it is no secret they all were experimenting in the 1960s, but by the classic Floyd period, they were all pretty clean except for Rick who picked up a pretty significant cocaine habit in the mid/late 70s.
Gilmour even left that little cough on the recording for the intro of the title track from Wish You Were Here to remind him to not smoke cigs. And Gilmour had a little bout with cocaine, but all reports indicate it was brief (about 2 years).
Now, Gilmour and Polly basically admit to having smoked pot with their kids, but I'm assuming all you baws on the music board are "down" with just weed, right?
Very cool. Thanks for the insight.
I knew of Syd Barret and his mentall illness exacerbated by LSD abuse.

That would be awesome, but I don't see any guitar that Gilmour has owned goes anywhere near that cheap, with a certificate of authenticity.

I have read numerous times in the books that the Sid incident had a huge effect on their decisions going forward. Neither was known as heavy users but that deal with Sid scared them..
