Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" was way more popular than Dolly's version, even though Dolly wrote the song.
The original was No. 1 on the country charts, so it was no slouch.

Life is a Highway (original by Tom Cochrane; more popular version by Rascal Flatts via the Cars movie)
Gimme a T for Texas original by Jimmie Rodgers; more popular version by Lynyrd Skynyrd)
ETA: removed You Really Got Me (original by The Kinks; more popular version by Van Halen) because Kafka told me I was wrong and he was right.

first of all, more popular =\= better

I’ve always preferred this version
The CJs remake is a carbon copy
It IS more popular, thanks to MTV & radio play

John Fogerty readily admitted that Tina did the song better than CCR.

The Queen of the "cover more popular than the original song" must be Linda Ronstandt.
She also covered Zevon's [PPPM]
and Zevon's Carmelita
But her covers got Warren some much needed royalty $$$

Of the several she did better than the original artist, this is my favorite:
You feel far more loneliness, desperation and heartbreak in the Everly's country wail. Linda hits the notes, but can't match the emotion.
And I'm not even sure it's the most popular; IIRC the original was a top 10 hit

I agree -- the Everly Bros version DOES confer "more loneliness, desperation and heartbreak in the Everly's country wail".
But like many covers, a new totally vibe, mood and version is created.
Linda's version is upbeat (the band really kicks arse) and sorta like, "Yeah, I loved and lost, but dammit, I'm gonna keep on going after it until I get it."

The Everly Brothers had the orginal in 1960.

Glen Campbell had the hit on this John Hartford original.

I always liked the original better.
That said, it may be because I always knew the story behind the song.
Dolly knew she needed to get out of Porter Waggoner's shadow if she was ever going to reach her potential, but she just couldn't come out and say it to his face because their friendship was so strong and he had done so much to jump start her career.
So, she wrote this song and sang it for him as a sort of "break-up".

Linda's version is strictly "Yacht Rock": no feeling, just sounds. Maybe preferable to James Taylor's snoozefest remakes of R&B hits - but not by much.
