Don’t confuse #2 with the best 90’s band. I just picture Nirvana when the term grunge is brought up. Heavy, distorted, sloppy, angst, screaming. Cross between punk and heavy metal at their best.
using your definition, absolutely.
"grunge" existed before them. and they likely weren't the best or most talented of the big 4/5 best known from that era.
but they are the ones that kickstarted that whole era in the mainstream.
Kurt's songwriting and public persona basically epitomized the "grunge movement" and was known as the voice of a generation.

They had a ton of talent. They worked really hard to act like they didn’t, especially Kurt. He really put a lot into the lyrics and music and did more to influence the next 10 years of rock music than any other artist.
